For centuries, Notre Dame, and its spire in particular, have been at the absolute center of that visual landscape. The cathedral is the essence of what Paris means to all those who consider it the most beautiful city in the world, both those who walk the streets of Paris on a daily basis and those who visit it only once — or perhaps have seen it only in their dreams.
