The question before City Council is, what do we do with an extra $75 million above and beyond our $3.4 billion budget? City staff proposed rebating $50 million to all CPS Energy customers and using $25 million for other city priorities. I say, let’s give all $75 million back to ratepayers. These are one-time funds. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? No one predicted the crushing economic impacts of the COVID pandemic, the widespread failure of the electrical grid during Winter Storm Uri or the extended heat wave this summer. Yes, these events also impacted CPS Energy and the city of San Antonio, but they profoundly affected residents. Many people are still struggling to recover.
