Worldwise: The businesswoman and former beauty editor dishes on her favorite things and how she started her fragrance company
When beauty editor Brianna Arps was laid off from Refinery29 in 2018, she found herself living off unemployment, applying for positions she never heard back from, and battling low spirits. Arps, 29, discovered long showers followed by a spritz of her favorite perfume provided a much needed boost to her mood.
“With me being at a low point in my life and wanting to get back into the creative field and sphere, I took it upon myself to learn about fragrance and perfumery, and the scientific connections, and the psychology behind it,” Arps says. “Three years later, Moodeaux finally launched.” “Fifty percent of proceeds from limited-edition merchandise goes directly toward other perfumers like me, who are looking to break into the industry or enhance what they have going on,” Arps says. “To date, we’ve been able to offer three micro grants to three other women who look exactly like me.”
An artist I admire is… Christina Martinez is the artist behind June and Mars who cultivates self-expression, self-exploration and articulations of self-love through painting—whether it be her infamous self-portraits or thought-provoking abstract pieces. There’s an overarching, recurring theme in her art of finding beauty in the unexpected, often at the lowest depths, that encourages all those who come across her work to keep blooming.
