🍞 'People still need bread': The Kyiv bakery that gave away 100,000 loaves as bombs fell

“We never closed. When the invasion happened, people were already in the bakery, on the night shift. Others were on their way in. Perhaps work stopped for a few hours while everyone was in shock. What changed was that we decided to only bake for people who needed bread. To customers [at the shop] we offeredFor Makievska and her staff, keeping the ovens going felt important. “Bread is an essential food,” she says. “If you decide to work in something like this, it is a commitment.
“Sometimes I’ll get a message from someone saying thank you for the cherry pie,” Makievska says. “It makes me happy they can do this.”
