Google hasn't always been known by its iconic name and had a curious nickname decades ago
The world's most used search engine hasn't always been the Google we all know and search on almost every single day. Beginning as a PHD research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were studying at Stanford University in January 1996, it's grown to become of of the world's largest companies.
On Google's recent 25th anniversary, many social media users were shocked to hear of the search engine's original name. Taking to Twitter , UmdarTamker said: "Backrub...wtf...What were they smoking back in 90s ??" Another user, BARBlESBUSSY, said: "what was the inspiration behind this original name" while chroniclesPHC asked: "Who knows the back story about "BACKRUB""
The name Google came from a graduate student at Stanford named Sean Anderson. He supposedly suggested the word "googolplex" during a brainstorming session, to which Page countered with the shorter "googol", which represents an enormous number - 1 followed by 100 zeroes.
