Discontent has been growing at a local level, with members tabling motions at party meetings calling for a shift in policy
The Labour leader has come under fire from members, councillors and MPs over his failure to call for a ceasefire in the region – instead supporting the UK and US government in backing a ‘humanitarian pause’ Labour has so far resisted calls for a ceasefirethat grassroots supporters were “heartbroken” and “angry”.
“People are upset, they are angry, and they want Keir to lead on this issue to ask for the international community to come together to ask for a ceasefire and they want him to hold the Tories to account on this issue.” In calling for pauses rather than a ceasefire, Labour is aligned with the UK government, the US and EU.
“That’s why Labour should be leading on these issues and should be calling for a ceasefire. We should be leading the debate based on our values.”Romford Constituency Labour Party passed this motion at its All Members Meeting tonight on the situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. It calls for human rights to be put first.“My understanding is that some regional and national offices have discouraged motions being brought on the subject.
Reflecting the General Secretary’s guidance, a London regional official expressed concerns that it could “become a flashpoint” for the expression of views that would risk infringing Labour’s codes of conduct on antisemitism and Islamophobia. The motion would be ruled out of order, they said.: “My experience, according to the argumentation given to me, would amount to a complete ban on any resolution and there are certainly a large number of other CLPs where this has been applied.
