With so many influential faith leaders demanding concrete action to stop shootings like the one last month behind St. Stephen’s Cathedral, legislators just might feel enough pressure to act.

Faith leaders gathered last week near the scene of a shooting behind St. Stephen's Cathedral to call on lawmakers to do more to rein in gun violence in Harrisburg. The Very Rev. Amy Welin, Dean of St. Stephens Episcopal Cathedral, spoke the unvarnished truth this week. She said the gun situation in Harrisburg has become intolerable, and it’s time for people of faith to pressure lawmakers to do something about it.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Aug. 7 behind St. Stephens, one of the city’s signature downtown shrines, and it has shaken the faith community in Harrisburg. Many see the gunshots getting closer and closer to downtown and the sanctity of historic cathedrals.Bryan Miller, Executive Director of Heading God's Call in Philadelphia, speaks at Wednesday's event with faith leaders calling for an end to gun violence near where a teenager was shot behind St.

Rev. Jackson believes most Christians support laws that allow responsible people to own guns but keeps them away from children, criminals and the mentally ill. Adam Garber, Executive Director of CeaseFire PA, believes such voices could have a significant impact this year on Pennsylvania’s legislature.

CeaseFire PA wants the legislators to rein in irresponsible gun dealers. It wants stronger laws to mandate reporting lost or stolen weapons, and it wants the legislature to pass a red flag law to help families keeps guns away from loved ones who may be mentally unstable. That just makes common sense.
