IndyCar's Pato O'Ward took advantage of a Josef Newgarden crash to win in Iowa. Newgarden was taken to the hospital as a precaution when he fainted after the race.
"Everything felt fine to me up to that point. I did have a vibration at the start of that stint. It’s always possible to have a mismatched set , but that was totally unexpected when it happened, and it caught me by surprise."
After the race, a Chevy official told IndyStar they believed Newgarden's right-rear suspension failed.for second place around Lap 200, Pato O’Ward inherited the lead, and he stayed out front to get his second win of the year. He’s squarely back into the title chase, 36 points behind leader Marcus Ericsson in fifth place. He came to Iowa 75 points back in sixth.
O’Ward had to weave his way through lapped traffic over the final 30 laps and could be heard communicating with strategist and Arrow McLaren SP team president Taylor Kiel about trying to get some help with the Chevy cars ahead of him to pick a lane.“I knew no one was going to listen anyways. ‘Just pick a lane!’ But I know those guys don’t care,” O’Ward continued. “The best thing you can do there is do your thing, and I got by them nice and smoothly.
Newgarden would have taken the points lead with a win, but he fell into a tie for 3rd-place with Scott Dixon in the title chase – now 34 points back. Despite his 24th-place finish, Newgarden managed to make up 10 points to Ericsson over the weekend.
