The driver and the front-seat passenger were in an SUV that hit the end of a guardrail before catching fire.
The driver was pulled to safety as the vehicle became engulfed in flames during the incident in Bushkill Township, Pa., according to a news release from township police.
The driver and the front-seat passenger were in a southbound SUV that struck the end of a guardrail shortly before 6 p.m. in the 100 block of East Moorestown Road at Broad Road, police said.Efforts to remove the 80-year-old passenger were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek on Thursday identified the passenger as Michael A. Delvecchio, of Bath. The cause of death was carbon monoxide toxicity, and the manner of death was ruled accidental, Lysek said. The driver was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Police did not immediately release the person’s extent of injuries, nor did they identify the driver.
Authorities were continuing to investigate the crash and asked anyone with information that may be useful or who witnessed the crash to call township police at 610-759-9588.
