The university continues to face fallout from accusations against a retired government professor.
The Charles River and the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. By Nick Anderson Nick Anderson Reporter covering higher education, national education policy and the global education market Email Bio Follow May 3 at 3:41 PM A committee of faculty, staff and students from Harvard University’s prestigious government department is asking for an external review of the school’s response to the alleged misconduct of a longtime professor who is now retired.
"This deplorable situation went on for more than 20 years. There appear to have been a few instances in which individuals reported unacceptable behavior to various actors in the university, yet we are not aware that any action was taken." Jonathan Swain, a Harvard spokesman, wrote in an email Friday that Bacow has previously stated the university’s willingness to consider an external review of the climate within the government department. But Bacow believes that such a review cannot begin, Swain wrote, until the university finishes an investigation of alleged misconduct, as required under the federal anti-discrimination law known as Title IX.
