Aisa Bibi’s lawyer said she had joined her family in Canada after months of living in safe houses.
By Paul Schemm Paul Schemm Overnight foreign editor based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Email Bio Follow May 8 at 4:15 AM A Christian Pakistani woman once condemned to death for blasphemy was allowed to leave for Canada more than six months after a court overturned her conviction, her lawyer and Pakistani media said Wednesday.
The dismissal of her conviction provoked death threats and days of violent protests from hardline religious groups. Bibi was convicted in 2010 of making derogatory comments about the Prophet Muhammad to fellow farm workers. The punishment for blasphemy in Pakistan is death. The high court finally overturned the conviction in Oct. 31 and then dismissed an appeal against the acquittal on Jan. 29, issuing blistering statements saying she was convicted on the basis of false evidence.
