The Paisley hospital –which is missing 10 per cent of its nursing workforce – admitted it had spent £2.3m in the first three months of the 2023/24 financial year on agency nurses and midwives alone.
The Royal Alexandra Hospital is spending more than £1 million a month on agency staff, the Paisley Daily Express can reveal.

“But we know many have warned for months that they feel unsupported and at breaking point, and that there is a crisis of staff retention across the health board and Scotland in general. He said: “Along with all health boards in Scotland, NHSGGC is working to reduce agency spend by increasing the numbers of substantive staff and the number of staff bank workers available.
“The number of vacancies within RAH has remained consistent since June as some colleagues chose to retire or move on, and other nurses are recruited into vacant posts. The internationally educated nurses and newly qualified nurses detailed above with help fill some of the current vacancies.”
