Padres fall to 1-5 against Pirates this season with latest loss, which ends with tying, winning runs in scoring position in 9th inning
Somehow, a guy who couldn’t figure out how to pitch at the start of the game ended up getting the better of him and the Padres on Wednesday afternoon at Petco Park.
The Pirates got solo home runs leading off the second, fourth and ninth innings and finished a series victory and a season series in which they won five of six against the Padres. Home runs by Ji-man Choi and Bryan Reynolds were the only hits Lugo allowed through 5⅔ innings. A single by Reynolds was followed by four outs that completed Lugo’s first seven-inning outing since his first start of the season. He finished with a season-high eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter.Oviedo, who was 0-7 with a 5.44 ERA over his previous eight starts, allowed just one run, and that was a fluke.Oviedo was charged with three automatic balls — ball four to Fernando Tatis Jr.
Oviedo set down the Padres in order in the fourth and fifth and got a double play grounder to end the sixth.
