Sizing up the Padres’ 40-man roster heading into the 2023 season: Michael Wacha lands in San Diego to provide important depth to the back of the rotation
with 13 2/3 scoreless innings in helping to bounce the Dodgers out of the NLCS that year. Wacha went on to win 17 games as an All-Star in 2015, but various injuries over the years have prevented him from throwing more than 180 1/3 innings in one season. In fact, he’d thrown 211 innings between 2018 and 2019 when he entered free agency and the demand for his services yielded $3 million guaranteed with the Mets in 2020 , $3 million with the Rays in 2021 and $7 million with the Red Sox in 2022 .
