Myers went 1-for-3 with a walk in his other start in the leadoff spot. He is hitting .368/.429/.526 over his last six games, the albatross in a lineup that is hitting .204/.268/.304 over that stretch.
Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim had been hitting leadoff against left-handers but he’s 1-for-24 over his last six games and will bat fifth on Friday.Juan Soto and Jake Cronenworth are the lone lefties in Friday’s lineup, but Soto’s issues extend well beyond the last six games as he’s mired in a 3-for-48 slump over his last 15 games, dropping his batting line down to .202/.375/.319 since joining the Padres.
Yet it is the switch-hitting Josh Bell getting the day off instead of Soto, who hasn’t had a regular rest day outside of missing three games with a minor back ailment in late August. Bell will give way at first base on Friday to Brandon Drury, who 2-for-3 with a double in his return from the concussion list on Thursday.
Drury will also hit cleanup, while the top two catchers on the roster are in the lineup — Austin Nola behind the plate and Jorge Alfaro serving as the DH.
