Jake Cronenworth has always been hard on himself, and new contract has made that more so; Yu Darvish still feeling effects of flu

Jake Cronenworth was a member of the National Honor Society in high school. He came within 40 units of completing both his major and minor at the University of Michigan while playing baseball and leaving school after his junior year.

The reality is that the earnestness with which he speaks and fervor with which he goes about his constant tinkering and fine-tuning does not seem all that different this year. There might be a handful of players in the Padres clubhouse who suffer losses and enjoy victories as overtly as Cronenworth. Cronenworth has always been defined by consistency in the field and what he does to help the Padres win more than the basic numbers. His 10.5 career bWAR — Wins Above Replacement as determined by Baseball-Reference — entering this season ranked 19th in the major leagues since the start of the 2020 season. That was despite a .770 OPS that was lower than all but one player ranked ahead of him in WAR and also lower than all of the nine players ranked immediately behind him.

“I’m just not in a good position to hit right now,” Cronenworth said. “It seems like when I do, I smoke the ball right at a guy.”
