Walks, bad-luck error help Dodgers to four-run eighth inning; Padres use seven pitchers in relief of Yu Darvish
The Padres began the season doing what they said they would until a potential double-play grounder slipped through the webbing of Jake Cronenworth’s glove and the game went with it. The Dodgers took advantage of what had to be ruled an error by Cronenworth to score four runs in the eighth inning and held on to win an historic season opener 5-2 at the Gocheok Sky Dome.
Tyler Wade led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a long fly ball to center field and scored on Bogaerts’ flared single over second base. Wade helped the Dodgers tie the game when he yanked a throw on a grounder by Teoscar Hernández to start the fourth inning. Wade’s throw sailed up the line toward right field, and Heyward easily reached second base, moved to third on a groundout to the right side and scored on Jason Heyward’s fly ball to right field.
