Fernando Tatis Jr. was developed as the Padres’ shortstop of the future.

On Wednesday, he was named a Gold Glove finalist in right field, a position switch to accommodate a glut of middle infield depth that includes Ha-Seong Kim again nominated, this time at second base and as utilityman who played exceptional defense at three infield spots. Both are vying for the first Gold Gloves. Tatis led all NL defenders with 27 total runs saved in 2023, behind only the Blue Jays’ Daulton Varsho in the majors, according to Sports Info Solutions.

He was 19 runs better than the next-best right fielder and was tied for second among NL outfielders with 12 assists, trailing only the Nationals’ Lane Thomas. Thomas and the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts are the other finalists in right field. A finalist at shortstop last year, Kim was tied for 11th among all defenders with 16 defensive runs and ranked fifth with 10 defensive runs saved at second base. Fellow finalist Nico Hoerner is among the second basemen ahead of Kim.
