Devin Weedon was walking to Simon Gratz High School Mastery Charter Tuesday morning when he was shot in the chest.
It all happened at about 7:30 a.m. at the corner of North 16th Street and Hunting Park Avenue in the Nicetown neighborhood, where the victim – identified by family members as Devin Weedon – was on his way to Simon Gratz High School Mastery Charter when he was shot in the chest.
In the moments leading up to the shooting, the 10th grader had been involved in a physical altercation with three other young men dressed in black. According to Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp, one had on a ski mask. At some point, one of the other young men pulled out a handgun. But what led to the fight remains unclear and no arrests have been made.“He had his whole life ahead of him,” Gripp said during a press conference.about the moment he received the devastating phone call.
The teen was a member of the school football team, and had aspirations of playing professionally, his father said. He was frequently seen playing football in the streets with his brothers and father. Gary Weedon also told“My son, he really don’t get into conflicts with nobody,” Weedon said. “He came home. He goes in his room. He plays on his computer. He plays his games.”
