The Harris County Commissioners Court on Tuesday voted to approve more than $10 million in funding for an affordable housing project in Midtown that was delayed after its owners came under scrutiny for the conditions a complex they own in Fifth Ward.
, which passed Commissioners Court unanimously on Tuesday, from the previous meeting’s agenda so that the county could attach tenant protections to the money. Those protections include more frequent inspections, a stricter repair timeline, and rights for tenants to organize without fear of retaliation, among other things.
Now that the county has approved its portion of the funding, Houston Housing and Community Development Director Keith Bynam said the city will move forward with their end of the bargain. He said he expects the city to approve $15 million funding at the next City Council meeting on Aug. 16. Ellis said he plans to formalize the commitment in a memorandum of understanding at the next Commissioners Court meeting.
