One, however, stands out as more qualified to handle the duties of the state’s highest appellate court in civil cases. That is Republican incumbent Justice Evan Young, who in November 2021 was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to fill the position left open by former Justice Eva Guzman. The Yale Law School graduate was formerly a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, whom he told us he admired for his neutrality, and was unswayed by personal viewpoints or partisan politics. “I can hear Justice Scalia’s voice all the time reminding me,” he told us.
Young also demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the less publicized administrative role of the Supreme Court.
