Dear Care and Feeding: How are we supposed to get this kid to take punishment seriously?
You have to give your son something to do that prevents him from going to sleep. There may be instances where this isn’t possible, but more often than not, you’re going to have to figure out a way to keep him engaged so he doesn’t see punishment as an opportunity to just relax and catch a few Zs. Consider purchasing some grade-level writing and math workbooks that he can complete when he’s in time-out; his teacher may be willing to enforce this too, instead of allowing him to nap in class.
You can also assign him the task of drawing a picture to explain what he did wrong and how he plans to behave in the future. If you’re in the house doing chores, you can have him help you. If you catch him dozing, have him do 10 jumping jacks to energize himself. Again, you may not always be able to prevent him from sleeping, but your goal should be to keep him awake more often than not when he gets in trouble.My daughter and husband have an aversion to eggs.
