The fan — who was one of the many spectators who stormed the field after the win — was possibly waving to him or going in for a handshake with Johnson as he walked by, and the senior appeared to raise his hand, but the fan kept walking.
Johnson then punched the fan near the back of his head as he was walking away, knocking off his cowboy hat. Johnson had to be pulled away from coaches before the situation got further out of hand. It’s unclear from the video if the fan said anything to Johnson before the punch was thrown. It was a frustrating loss for No. 9 Oregon who blew a 34-17 lead early in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Newell ran for the go-ahead touchdown with 8:11 remaining to propel No. 22 Oregon State to victory.
To make matters worse for Oregon, it missed out on a spot in the Pac-12 championship game when No. 12 Washington beat Washington State later Saturday. No. 14 Utah won a tiebreaker and will face No. 5 Southern California on Friday for the league title. As for the after-game punching incident, neither Oregon nor Johnson had commented or released a statement by the time of publication.
