A Big Ten vote is expected to take place later today to formalize their admission, barring any last-minute snags.Oregon and Washington are expected to join the Big Ten alongside fellow Pac-12 defectors UCLA and USC in 2024. The Big Ten will remain at 14 teams for the 2023-24 academic year before adding the four West Coast schools ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Oregon and Washington would begin play in the fall of 2024. The schools are expected to take a cut rate of the Big Ten media rights revenue.The conference switch for Washington and Oregon comes after Pac-12 schools failed to come to an agreement on a grant of rights deal with the conference this week.
Washington and Oregon are not expected to receive a full share of the Big Ten’s revenue distribution when they join the conference, but the partial shares they will receive ultimately appears to be enough for both schools to determine they would be better off changing conferences than staying put. As recently as last week, Big Ten leaders were saying publicly that they were not expecting to explore further expansion this year. During his press conference at last week’s Big Ten Media Days, commissioner Tony Petitti said Big Ten presidents and athletic directors instructed him to focus on integrating USC and UCLA into the league rather than on adding more teams into the conference.
