Oprah Winfrey isn’t backing down on American Dirt

On Sunday the mogul posted an Instagram video in which she got candid about the controversial novel, the latest selection for her book club. In the clip Winfrey said she’s been paying attention to criticism of the book, specifically from the Latinx community. However, she added, she’s not ditching the novel. Winfrey instead plans to lean all the way in, hosting a discussion that will bring together “all sides” of the debate for an episode of her Apple TV+ book club series.

“I’ve spent the past few days listening to members of the Latinx community to get a greater understanding of their concerns, and I hear them. I do,” Winfrey said in the video, posted to the Oprah’s Book Club Instagram account. “What I wanna do is bring people together from all sides to talk about this book.”released just a week ago, has already become the biggest literary controversy of 2020 thus far.

Cummins, who is white, has made clear that she’s aware of these critiques. In an author’s note, Cummins that she was “worried that…I had no business writing a book set almost entirely in Mexico, set entirely among immigrants. I wished someone slightly browner than me would write it.”for her book club, she renewed the outrage cycle, with some wondering why she would throw her weight behind such a divisive pick. In her video Winfrey said that she actually first read the novel last summer, long before it was released to the public.
