Opinion: The Department of Defense should work with private companies on safety standards and repairs for military housing, writes Sandy Apgar and Mark Cancian
The Defense Department reformed its business operations two decades ago by establishing public-private partnerships for military housing.
This allowed the military to focus resources on its core war-fighting mission, while experienced private firms eliminated a $20 billion housing-maintenance backlog and renovated or replaced 141,000 substandard on-base houses. Recent reports of unsafe conditions and unresponsive repair services require immediate action by the Defense Department to fix the problems—but not kill the program.
