Opinion: Should the United States just abandon use of the lowly penny? [Opinion]
While this won’t solve all the coin shortages we’re experiencing, I think it’s time to end the penny for cash purchases.
When I was stationed in South Korea around 1996, the U.S. government ended the use of the penny on bases there and everything was rounded up to or down to a nickel. That was 26 years ago.Given inflation, and despite the nostalgia of the one-cent piece, it’s time to move past the penny.
