Opinion: Seven years after getting a heart transplant, I competed in the Transplant Games [Opinion]

They are the people in front of me who are living donors and grateful organ recipients.”I was — I am — one of them. I received my heart transplant from my donor seven years ago and was participating in my first national Transplant Games.
After training for two years, I grew anxious as the Transplant Games approached. I was scheduled to compete in ballroom dance, the 5K race/walk, bowling and trivia competitions. My dance event was held on the first afternoon of the games at the convention center. I was pleasantly surprised by the camaraderie I immediately experienced in the venue. The other “athletes” were friendly and chatty as we compared our transplant stories and waited to go on to perform.
I did go on to receive a gold medal in ballroom dance after my competition. But the true golden moments that I experienced in this special community were really the prize for me. I made new friends from across the United States who I know will be part of my life forever. I even met participants from other countries, such as Australia and Brazil. One of the participants from Brazil approached me a quarter of a mile out from the finish line of the 5K.
