Opinion: People keep dying in San Diego jails. It's time for county supervisors to be more involved. [Opinion]
Last year, a record 18 San Diego County jail inmates died in custody. This year, 16 have already, suggesting a terrible new mark could be set before San Diegans elect a new sheriff in the Nov. 8 election.
Sure enough, an inmate died Monday. This ongoing failure may be the most shameful tragedy in San Diego County government history — and any urgency among county officials is inadequate until deaths decline dramatically. July alone saw five. County supervisors have long left the scope of the elected sheriff’s budget to the sheriff — even though they ultimately vote on approval. But with each death, it’s clearer that the Sheriff’s Department, both under longtime former Sheriff Bill Gore and since his retirement in February, wouldn’t adjust enough to avoid being the California jail system with the highest inmate casualty rate.
