Opinion: It is time for U.S. to reopen Friendship Park [Opinion]
” : For more than a decade, dedicated volunteers nurtured the binational garden at Friendship Park. In a shocking and disgraceful act, a Border Patrol agent bulldozed the plants, signs, paths and benches of the garden in 2020. There has been no compensation for these “rogue” actions.
Border Patrol closed the door to Friendship Park in 2020, and refuses to reopen this sacred space where grandparents can see their grand-babies for the first time, where children can visit their parents, and where people of faith gather weekly at the wall/s to break bread and worship together.It is past time for the Border Patrol to treat all people with respect, to take full responsibility for its mistake in bulldozing the garden, and above all, to reopen Friendship Park.
