Opinion: If the GOP built their ideal health-care system . . . it’d be Obamacare
By Catherine Rampell Catherine Rampell Columnist covering economics, public policy, politics and culture Email Bio Follow Columnist March 28 at 6:21 PM Wanna know the reason Republicans have had so much trouble coming up with a “replacement” plan for Obamacare?
Trump’s own health and human services secretary and attorney general reportedly opposed the move, as did Republican congressional leaders. In fairness, it’s a near-impossible task, assuming terrific-ness requires adhering to Republican principles; fulfilling Trump’s promises to protect those with preexisting conditions and guarantee “everybody” gets covered; and not producing a near-facsimile of Obamacare.
Trump and his co-partisans have now explicitly committed to protecting another of those “legs” — preventing insurers from denying coverage or raising premiums for those with preexisting conditions — at least in rhetoric, though not in practice.
