Cutting parking at Balboa Park is not helping the environment
” : Thanks to the letter writers who decried the loss of parking along Park Boulevard near Balboa Park and elsewhere in North Park. We have Councilmember Stephen Whitburn to thank, but the entire City Council is complicit. The median on University Avenue in North Park also has caused parking loss. I asked merchants at two businesses near the median’s west end if anyone from the city had visited them prior to construction to ask about the potential impact. They said no. One told me business was down 50 percent, the other down 20 percent. In addition to businesses, the parking loss harms people with walking limitations.
Now, Whitburn’s chief aide has been caught in a conflict of interest and has moved on. Democrats, it’s time to move on from Whitburn. There’s got to be someone who actually cares about constituents, not just a small number of bicyclists.Two readers wrote in to complain about reduced parking at Balboa Park. I have a friendly suggestion for them: Bike to the park.
Ironically, the readers recognize that parking spaces were reduced to create more bike lanes, but they never consider the possibility of using those lanes. I recognize that not everyone is physically capable of biking, but nearly all of us can, no matter our age, and even with kids in tow. The city is moving in the right direction by encouraging biking over driving. It takes a while for behaviors and perceptions to change. I hope we have the patience to stick with it.
