Opinion: Appreciating the little things and making time for self care brought me joy in 2022 [Opinion]

Members of the The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board and some local writers share their thoughts on 2022. We invite you to share the three favorite things, big or small, that brought you joy or hope in 2022.No matter how good or bad life gets, 2022 has reminded me of the importance of finding joy in the little things — such as morning coffee, neighborhood walks and creative moments — because the big things are out of your control.

I’ve often found this kind of joy in preparing food. Now that the weather is cooling down, I’m pretty much entirely running on soup, which I wasn’t a huge fan of until this year. There’s no better feeling than throwing together a delicious soup out of the random items sitting around my kitchen, especially when those items include Buldak noodles or frozen dumplings. I also discovered sparkling espressos in 2022, and found myself excited every morning to experiment with different flavors.

While my physical nourishment hinged on copious amounts of soup, my mental nourishment has been almost completely dependent on my daily walks. Since starting my first full-time, remote job at the end of 2021, I’ve learned that I have to schedule time to see the sun — otherwise I’ll become a shell of a human. But aside from my natural need for vitamin D, I love the ways my walks make me feel closer to my neighborhood.

Lastly, this year has shown me the value of having hobbies, especially when they don’t involve any screens. So often I feel like my focus outside of work is robbed by things that drain me more than they fuel me, such as TikToks and trashy dating shows, and it feels so refreshing when I’m able to redirect my focus towards something constructive. Most recently, I’ve found a lot of satisfaction in playing sudoku — it feels like air conditioning for my brain.

In one way or another, all of these things acted as a form of self care for me throughout 2022. It’s not always easy to take time for yourself and be present when the state of the world feels grim and unpredictable, but it almost always pays off. You can worry about tomorrow tomorrow.
