British musical upstart mincemeatlive started small on the London fringe but kept coming back, buoyed by word-of-mouth, rapturous reviews and an army of superfans. 🕵️ Now in the West End, it's been greeted with five-star adulation, sam_marlowe writes
The musical was first seen at London’s tiny, tirelessly innovative New Diorama Theatre in 2019 where it was part of an initiative, masterminded by the venue’s innovative artistic director David Byrne, which offered emerging theatre-makers the opportunity of a five-week run. Byrne’s far-sighted scheme would also, in 2021, benefit the development of Ryan Calais Cameron’s award-winning play, went on to garner mainstream acclaim first at the Royal Court and, earlier this year, in the West End.
They had an array of day jobs between them, from copywriting and marketing to tutoring and working in tax consultancy, while Hodgson was in the glam-punk band Felix Hagan and the Family with Hagan. The four of them became increasingly drawn toward musicals, so they formed SpitLip in 2017 and began searching for a subject.
“I immediately thought, oh no, it’ll be all grey and powdered eggs,” says Cumming. “But actually, it’s about a Second World War you never knew about, and that’s what drew us in. And it allowed us to play fast and loose with what you’d expect a musical to be.”
