The date will mark the 243rd anniversary of Congress adopting and signing the Declaration of Independence, which announced the colonies’ separation from Great Britain. However, the observation of Independence Day only became commonplace after the War of 1812, according to the Library of Congress, and Congress only passed a law making Independence Day a federal holiday in 1870.
Whether you're staying at home or going out of town, here's what you need to know about Thursday's closures.Many stores will remain open on Independence Day, while some have modified hours. Costco is the largest retailer staying closed on Independence Day. The wholesale club is also closed for other holidays, including New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day and Labor Day.The Fourth of July is a federal holiday, so all government offices, both federal and local, are closed on Thursday.Most banks are closed Thursday, but some have opted to keep certain branch locations open for at least part of the day, so you may need to call your local bank to confirm.
U.S. stocks markets are closed Thursday in observance of Independence Day. Foreign financial markets will be open on Thursday, July 4.These stores and restaurants are open Fourth of July 2019The United States Postal Service will not deliver mail on the Fourth of July. Most UPS and FedEx services will also be closed.Many garbage collection companies will also not be running, but check with your local garbage services provider to confirm.Courts will not be in session.
