Some 16 months later, I have come to the conclusion that I was wrong. Political affiliation should not be listed on the ballot for judicial candidates. I know what you’re thinking. This isn’t necessarily new information. I could have made those same arguments last year when I opined that nonpartisan general elections for judicial candidates are a “charade.”
Even before we got to this place, there were concerns about the judiciary seeming to be governed by politics rather than law. But now, in this time, in this climate, concerns have become elevated to full-fledged problems. In today’s political environment, “seeming to be governed by politics” can easily become — if it has not already become — ”is governed by politics.”
All of us are so much more than our political affiliation. Who we are as people, the thoughts we have about life, cannot be easily reduced to “Republican” or “Democrat.” One might argue that our political climate has become what it is because we reduce each other to those terms. These days, if we don’t know anything else about someone, if we know their party affiliation, we believe that we know who they are and what they are about.

‘Scrubs' Producer Eric Weinberg Denied Bail After Pleading Not Guilty in Sexual Assault CaseEric Weinberg, executive producer for the hit TV show “Scrubs,” has been denied bail after pleading not guilty to sexually assaulting five women whom prosecutors said he lured to photo shoots. Weinberg was arrested this month. He is charged with 18 felony counts including rape and false imprisonment. The judge on Tuesday ordered Weinberg held in custody until he returns to court Nov. 15. Prosecutors have said Weinberg used his Hollywood influence to lure women to photo shoots where he attacked them from 2014 to 2019. The DA also has said there may be other alleged victims and the investigation continues.
