For me, the arches and domes of the castle in southern Spain evoked the romance of “The Arabian Nights,” though I realized it had been built by the Moors. Thanks to Shakespeare, I also understood that the Moors looked like me, a child of one of a half dozen Black families in our 1980s suburban-Chicago school district.
My most significant exposure to regal African design had come in fourth grade, when I saw the traveling exhibit “The Treasures of King Tutankhamun” at the Field Museum. I studied its catalog so devotionally I could have been a docent. Later encounters with royal African décor were dominated by Hollywood set-designer fantasies: the cartoonish family palace of Eddie Murphy’s character in 1988’s “Coming to America” and the Afrofuturistic Wakanda of 2018’s “Black Panther.
