A high-profile death row inmate in Oklahoma was denied another appeal—despite the state’s Republican attorney general making an impassioned plea that his case deserves a second look.
A high-profile death row inmate in Oklahoma whose case has long been dogged by concerns and mounting evidence that he may have been wrongly convicted was denied another appeal to vacate his murder conviction. The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals’ five justices agreed unanimously that there was “no legal or factual ground which would require relief” in Richard Glossip’s case. The court refused to delay Glossip’s execution any further, setting a date—his ninth—in May.
Glossip, now 60, has been behind bars for the last quarter-century, and has always maintained that he was framed for the 1997 beating death of his employer, an Oklahoma City motel owner. The decision to uphold his conviction comes despite Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond’s petition for Glossip to be granted a new trial.

Oklahoma court upholds Richard Glossip’s murder convictionAn Oklahoma appeals court has upheld the murder conviction of death row inmate Richard Glossip. The decision Thursday by the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals clears the way for Glossip to be executed on May 18. The 60-year-old can still ask the state’s Pardon and Parole Board to recommend clemency to the governor. Glossip has long maintained his innocence in the 1997 murder-for-hire killing of his former boss, Barry Van Treese. Oklahoma’s attorney general had urged the court to vacate the conviction because he says a witness lied to the jury about his mental health and drug use.
