Members of the far-right Proud Boys and other protesters lead to the cancellation of Red Oak Community School’s “Holi-Drag Storytime” event Saturday at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbus.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — About 50 people, including members of the far-right Proud Boys and some reportedly armed with long rifles, protested outside a planned “Holi-Drag Storytime,” which had been canceled because of security concerns.
The Red Oak Community School’s event, which was to feature performers in drag, was scheduled for Saturday morning at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbus, where the school is based. The Ohio Chapter of the Proud Boys last month announced plans to attend and protest the event. Cheryl Ryan, the manager of Red Oak Community School, said Saturday an “internal disagreement” about security led to the decision to cancel Saturday’s event. Ryanthat she had difficulty in trying to obtain police protection for the event despite several efforts to contact the department.
