California officials are investigating cases of Legionnaires’ disease at a prison in the Central Valley after an inmate died of the disease.
California Health Care Facility, which opened in 2014 in Stockton, serves more than 2,000 inmates.
One tested positive for Legionnaires’ and 14 tested negative. One inmate’s results are still pending, officials say.Legionnaires’ spreads when people breathe in water droplets containing bacteria known as Legionella. Outbreaks typically occur when a building’s water or cooling system becomes contaminated.“The source of Legionella is still under investigation,” the corrections statement said.
