It's where the cool kids are at... and 'international harmonization' is important
Doug Brake has said the US mobile industry has watched"with increasing alarm as other countries allocate significantly more mid-band spectrum for 5G services." Brake added that his org felt China,"already well ahead of the United States in terms of prime 5G mid-band allocations, is doubling down on its 5G future by opening most of the 6 GHz band."
On 6GHz, the issue at the moment is that everyone wants a slice of it, and it doesn't matter what China does if everyone else decides to use 6GHz for something else. That is what Ofcom is trying to do - putting it out there that this is how the bandwidth could be used and trying to build an international consensus.
Ofcom is proposing that hybrid sharing approaches could be adopted to enable more than one application to use these frequency bands, and if successful, the same could be extended to other frequency bands now being considered for future applications, such as the 7-24GHz and THz ranges being floated for 6G networks.
Alternatively, a geographical sharing model could be adopted, whereby mobile network use of the upper 6GHz band could be licensed for specific high-traffic locations whilst allowing Wi-Fi use elsewhere.
