Ocean Beach's Dog Beach reopens to water contact after closing due to sewage spill [Breaking]
The water at Ocean Beach’s Dog Beach reopened to the public after being closed since Thursday due to a sewage spill, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality.
The spill occurred upstream in the San Diego River and raised bacteria levels to an amount that exceeded state health standards. According to a news release from the county, recent water quality samples at the popular beach for dog lovers met health standards. The news is likely to bring joy to canines and humans alike as San Diego experiences an especially hot holiday weekend.
The Tijuana Slough shoreline — from the international border to the south end of Imperial Beach — remains closed due to contamination. The county also has advisories in place for beaches at Tidelands Park in Coronado, Shelter Island, La Jolla Cove, North Cove Vacation Isle in Mission Bay and Children’s Pool in La Jolla. Although the beaches are still open, county officials say beachgoers are advised that bacteria levels have exceeded health standards and may cause illness.
