Loren Taylor, Sheng Thao remain locked in tight Oakland mayor race
OAKLAND — The race to be the city’s next mayor is, but new results Wednesday gave City Councilwoman Sheng Thao more reason for optimism, though Councilman Loren Taylor continues to hold a small lead.
Taylor has 28,872 votes to Thao’s 26,405, and he narrowly leads her 51% to 49% after both received vote transfers from other trailing candidates in a simulation of the city’s ranked choice format. Whoever is elected mayor will become the face of a city that is reeling from crises of homelessness and violent crime and where a majority of residents are unhappy with the town’s current direction.
