ANTIOCH — Fire investigators arrested an Oakland resident on suspicion of arson following a two-alarm vegetation fire that charred an acre Monday and came dangerously close to homes, fire officials said.
The 37-year-old was spotted by a witness who photographed him as he fled the area, according to Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesman Steve Hill. Investigators arrested him about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 2700 block of Hillcrest Avenue, Hill said. The blaze happened Monday about 7:50 p.m. in the area of Deer Valley Road and Prewett Ranch Drive. The fire was in heavy brush and pines and was moving toward homes and businesses on Deer Valley Road. The vicinity of the fire to those structures necessitated the second alarm.
