Oakland authorities begin clearing out last vestige of Wood Street homeless camp
One resident, Nanie, who declined to share her full name, said she has no plans to take up the city’s offer to move into a cabin, which she likened to a “dog house.” She was adamant she’ll remain at the property, even if clean-up crews tear down the makeshift structure where she lives alongside the rest of the tight-knit encampment community that residents have taken to calling the “Commons.”
Last year, the city won $4.7 million in state funding to help clear the camp and find shelter or housing for its occupants. The money was part of the “Encampment Resolution Grant” program created by Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has made clearing camps a priority. Raymond Lankford, an advocate for the unhoused and pastor at Zion Missionary Baptist Church in West Oakland, spoke at the encampment on Monday, thanking the men and women who lived there for bringing “national attention to the plight and the need for housing, not only in Oakland, but across California.”
The city helped put former camp resident Peter Doder up at a hotel while he waits to move into a subsidized apartment in Oakland. He returned to the encampment Monday to collect a few possessions, including a rowing machine and refrigerator that he stacked in a shopping cart.
