Doctors across the country and the tri-state are worried about a potentially long winter, as hospitals see a spike in RSV cases, as well as COVID and the flu — with concerns mounting. NBC New York's Pei-Sze Cheng reports.So what is RSV, how can you best protect against it and what else should you know?
Short for respiratory syncytial virus, RSV is a common ailment that usually causes mild cold-like symptoms, according to the CDC. Most people recover in a week or two, but the virus can be serious, particularly for infants and older adults. According to the CDC, RSV results in around 58,000 annual hospitalizations and 100 to 300 deaths among children under 5 each year in the U.S., which surprised -- and concerned -- doctors, and likely reflects how the COVID pandemic disrupted circulation patterns for conditions like RSV. The CDC says the season usually starts between mid-September and mid-November and peaks in late December to mid-February.
RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in kids younger than 1 in the United States.2.1 million doctor visits among kids younger than 5177,000 hospitalizations among adults aged 65 and upPeople infected with Respiratory Syncytial Virus usually show symptoms 4-6 days after infection.Like COVID, RSV can be diagnosed via antigen or PCR test. The most common diagnostic measure is a mouth swab or blood test that assesses white blood cell count, which viruses affect.
