NPR’s ‘World Cafe’ to spotlight Denton’s vibrant music scene

A four-part series looks at the people and institutions behind Little D’s reputation as a talent hub.

The pint-size music mecca of Denton is getting a big-time national boost this week.the long-running NPR music program, will air 15-minute segments from Little D tonight through April 7 on more than 200 radio stations across the U.S. The show’s host Raina Douris and contributing host Stephen Kallao traveled to Denton in February for the show’s recurring “Sense of Place” series.

Tuesday’s show focuses on Denton’s beloved music spot Dan’s Silverleaf, including interviews with bar founder Dan Mojica and Slobberbone singer Brent Best, who moonlights at the club’s sound engineer. Best described Dan’s friendly vibe as a rarity in clubland: “The longer I’ve toured and the more places I went to, the more special Dan’s has become.”

Wednesday’s show zeroes in on the University of North Texas’ famed jazz program, with a spotlight on the Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band. Thursday’s segment features an archival interview with folky prog-rockers Midlake. Friday’s show pays tribute to the grand poobahs of the Denton scene, Brave Combo, including interviews with bandleader Carl Finch and multi-instrumentalist Jeffrey Barnes.
