His latest book, ‘The Netanyahus,’ was rejected by many publishers but went on to win this year’s Pulitzer Prize for fictionEmily BobrowJoshua Cohen’s novel “The Netanyahus” won this year’s Pulitzer Prize for fiction, but it almost wasn’t published. “It was rejected everywhere,” he says. Some editors told him the book was “too Jewish” and that he was “too white and male.” Others simply noted that his “sales track record sucks.
The novel saw the light of day only because a small imprint, New York Review Books, agreed to take the risk. The Pulitzer Prize committee hailed “The Netanyahus” as a “mordant, linguistically deft historical novel about the ambiguities of the Jewish-American experience.
