A new single-shot sterilization would no longer require cats to undergo the costly and time-consuming surgery to be spayed
cats kill up to 4 billion birds and 22 billion small mammals every year. These deaths dwarf other man-made causes of wildlife mortality like accidental poisoning and habitat destruction and pose an imminent threat to the health and diversity of our wildlife. One solution is to rein in cat fertility.
Birds, rodents, reptiles, and other animals brought to WildCare Animal Hospital in San Rafael, California, that had suffered lethal injuries from cats in 2019. “On some islands, populations of feral cats run amok without predators,” leading to the extinction of native mammals, reptiles, and birds, says Roland Kays, an ecologist and mammal conservationist at North Carolina State University.
Lindsey Vansandt, director of the Imperiled Cat Signature Program, takes time out of her day to play with colony cats in the zoo’s gene therapy study. She and the other researchers’ strive to improve the lives of feral cats and reduce the number of animals euthanized in shelters each year. “We know these cats have harder and shorter lives than our indoor “owned” cats do,” she wrote.
