Northern Ireland's rival parties announce power-sharing deal that can re-open government for the first time since 2017
Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald, center, and deputy leader Michelle O'Neill, right, with party colleagues speak to the media in the Great Hall of Parliament Buildings, Stormont, in Belfast, Friday, January 10, 2020.
The UK government in London also promised a large cash infusion into the tiny but strategically vital region if the republican Sinn Fein and the Democratic Unionist Party came to terms. "This is a deal that recognises that we live in a shared society, this is a deal that recognises that no one identity should be placed over another," she told BBC radio. The region's devolved assembly at Stormont collapsed in January 2017 over a scandal caused by the runaway costs of a renewable energy scheme.
Northern Ireland's border with the Republic of Ireland to the south provides the only UK-EU land frontier. The draft requires the executive "to provide official recognition of the status of the Irish language in Northern Ireland" and "respect the freedom of all persons...to choose, affirm, maintain and develop their national and cultural identity".
